Conflict over medals and money lands in the Senate

A report from Concerned Women for America (CWA), highlighted by LifeSiteNews, claims male athletes competing in women’s categories have won 2,293 gold medals and more than $501,498 in prize money from female competitors. The figures surfaced as the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing Wednesday related to participation of males in women’s sports, according to LifeSiteNews.

What the report claims

LifeSiteNews says the new CWA data updates a similar tally released last year and alleges the total of women’s gold medals taken by “trans-identifying” males has risen to 2,293. Additional claims attributed to CWA include:

• Trans-identifying male athletes have taken “over $501,498” in prize money from women in professional sports.
• In California, “over 611” women and girls placed second to a male allowed to compete in the women’s category.
• Trans-identifying males have competed in “more than 14,301” female sport events, amateur and professional.

CWA’s position, in their words

“It is shockingly unfair for biological women to have to compete against trans-identifying men,” CWA CEO Penny Nance said in a news release, per LifeSiteNews. Nance added, “Biological men have distinct advantages over biological women.” She argued the situation “puts women in harm’s way” and “eliminates opportunities for biological women to earn a living and win competitions.”

Political reaction cited

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) wrote on X: “Re-read that. 2,293 MALES have stolen gold medals from WOMEN. If you are born a male, you are a male, and should be competing with and against males. It is that simple.”

Sports advocate Riley Gaines said on X: “You cannot have both ‘gender identity’ and ‘sex’ as protected classes. They’re in conflict with one another. So pick one… You can prioritize the man for fear of hurting his feelings or you can protect the girls whom the sports team was designated for.”

Policy push and the state landscape

According to LifeSiteNews, CWA is urging Congress to pass three measures: the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025 (H.R.28/S.9); the Protection of Women in Olympic and Amateur Sports Act (H.R.1028/S.405); and the Title IX Clarification Act (H.R.8781/S.5179). The LifeSiteNews article also states that about 29 states prohibit males from competing in women’s sports through law or governing-body policy, and says a Supreme Court ruling in June affirmed states’ ability to protect girls’ sports. The piece does not identify the ruling by name.
