The Power of Forgiveness in Divisive Times

We live in an age of division, where differences in politics, beliefs, and values often create conflict and hostility. As Christians, we are called to live differently, and one of the most powerful ways we can do that is by practicing forgiveness. Forgiveness is at the heart of the gospel—Jesus forgave us even while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8).

Forgiveness is not easy, especially when we feel deeply hurt or wronged. But Jesus’ teachings make it clear that forgiveness is not optional for believers. In Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus says, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” This shows the importance of forgiving others, not just for their sake, but for our own spiritual well-being.

In divisive times, forgiveness can be a powerful tool for healing and reconciliation. When we choose to forgive, we break the cycle of anger and resentment. This doesn’t mean we excuse wrongdoing, but it does mean releasing the burden of bitterness and allowing God to bring justice in His time.

Forgiveness also opens the door for restored relationships. In a culture that thrives on canceling those with opposing views, choosing forgiveness can be a radical and Christ-like act that points people toward the love of God. As we forgive others, we reflect the grace that has been extended to us, and we can be agents of peace in a divided world.
