In a special episode of CBN’s Heaven Meets Earth podcast, former U.S. Army officer and Texas legislator Brian Birdwell recounts his survival inside the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. According to the episode, Birdwell was working in the building’s outer E‑Ring between Corridors 4 and 5—directly in the path of American Airlines Flight 77—and was the sole survivor from that section.
The moment of impact
Birdwell describes being “15 to 20 yards from an 80‑ton jet hitting the building at 530 miles an hour with 3,000 gallons of jet fuel still left in it.” He recalls shouting, “Jesus, I’m coming to see you,” believing death was imminent. The podcast presents his account of surviving the blast and fire.
Agonizing recovery
CBN reports Birdwell suffered severe lung damage and burns over 60 percent of his body, including third-degree burns over 40 percent. The episode says recovery spanned years of surgeries, rehabilitation, and intense pain. “There’s only one Great Physician, and He’s the reason I’m alive,” Birdwell tells CBN.
Return to the Pentagon
Twenty-five years after the attacks, the CBN episode says Birdwell is again working inside the Pentagon. It describes his role as “Assistant Secretary of War for Sustainment.”
Faith through the fire
CBN frames Birdwell’s story as one of faith and endurance. Birdwell reflects that his decision to accept Christ in 1971 steadied him at the moment of impact and through recovery.
