An Illinois family is celebrating a holiday miracle as their baby girl, Josie Jane, finally returned home after surviving a battle most adults would never endure. Born with an undiagnosed heart condition, Josie went into cardiac arrest twice and spent 268 days in the cardiac ICU. She underwent four open-heart surgeries before receiving a life-saving transplant that completely changed her future. Her parents say the long wait for a donor heart was worth every moment, and now they are using her story to highlight the truth and hope found in organ donation. Josie’s homecoming is nothing short of miraculous.

KCBD reports:

Josie Jane Hansen was born with an undiagnosed heart condition. At 2½ months old, she went into cardiac arrest twice and was flown to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

She survived four open-heart surgeries, including a full heart transplant on Oct. 6, and spent 268 days connected to machines in the cardiac ICU.

“She had cardiac arrest twice, had to be put on the ECMO life-support machine emergently through her neck. And then we flew her to Chicago on the helicopter, Flight for Life, to DeLurie Children’s. And then it’s been a whirlwind ever since,” Josie’s father, Joe Hansen, said.

Doctors performed the open-heart surgeries until they inserted a heart pump while she waited for a donor heart.

“Everything that she’s been through and everything that the children that we’ve watched go through on the cardio floor is nothing compared to anything that we’ll ever go through. And so I just have to power through each day,” Josie’s mother, Staci Hansen, said.

Josie’s story is a powerful reminder that God still works miracles in the middle of our darkest valleys. As her family celebrates this precious homecoming, may her journey inspire others to choose hope, choose life, and consider the gift of organ donation.
